Is sleep training the same as cry it out? What are my options for gentle sleep training?
Sleep training and cry it out (CIO) are not synonymous. There are many approaches to helping your child learn independent sleep skills.
Different Approaches:
-
Gradual Withdrawal/Chair Method
● Start close to the cot
● Gradually move further away
● Provide verbal and physical reassurance
● Takes longer but very gentle -
Pick Up/Put Down
● Pick up when crying
● Put down when calm
● Repeat as needed
● Good for younger children -
Shush/Pat Method
● Stay next to cot
● Provide physical comfort
● Use consistent shushing
● Gradually reduce support -
Camping Out
● Stay in room initially
● Gradually move towards door
● Provide verbal comfort
● Great for toddlers with separation anxiety -
Responsive Settling
● Timed comfort checks
● Increasing intervals
● Consistent response
● Balance of support and independence
Important Considerations:
● Choose method based on:
○ Child’s age and temperament
○ Your parenting style
● Be consistent with chosen method
● Give any method 3–7 days before changing
● Consider child’s developmental stage
